The three pillars
Medical Safety
We screen for cardiovascular health, liver function, seizure history, pregnancy, and medication interactions. Absolute exclusions include uncontrolled hypertension, recent myocardial infarction, active liver disease, uncontrolled seizure disorder, and pregnancy. The full matrix is on our contraindications page.
Full contraindications matrix →Mental Health Stability
We assess for active psychosis, uncontrolled bipolar disorder, and acute suicidality. A history of mental health challenges does not automatically disqualify you. What matters is stability: symptoms controlled, a therapist engaged, and a position of readiness rather than acute crisis.
Mental health considerations →Readiness and Intention
We ask: Why now? What are you hoping for? Do you have support at home? Are you approaching this from a place of growth rather than crisis avoidance? These conversations help us match you to the right retreat, or recommend integration coaching first if the timing is not right.
How the screening process works
Screening happens in stages. First, a written health questionnaire covering your medical history, psychiatric history, current medications, and intentions. Second, a phone conversation with a facilitator to assess psychological readiness and answer your questions. For some applicants, a third step: medical provider consultation to review specific health factors.
The full process typically takes two to four weeks from application to a decision. All medical information you share is confidential.
Screening is conducted by trained facilitators following a structured clinical protocol drawn from Facilitator Curriculum Module 5 (Screening). Our screening taxonomy aligns with Colorado NMHA 4 CCR 755-1 natural medicine facilitation standards.
What happens if you're not cleared
No shame. Not being ready now does not mean not being ready ever. If screening reveals a medical contraindication, psychiatric instability, or timing issue, we offer alternatives:
- Integration coaching to prepare for a future retreat
- Referrals to trauma-specialized therapists and psychiatrists
- A waitlist for future cohorts once a condition stabilizes
- Guidance on which medical clearances would change your eligibility
